Hello blog-nation. It's been a few weeks since my last blog. It's been pretty busy with life in general. I did have a chance to post this little design nugget.
I've been working with ACPF for about 3 months now. In addition to a new logo, I also designed all their new stationary, and a brand new website which you can see below.
Stay tuned for more design goodness throughout the summer! Hope you all had a good Fourth of July!

Oh So Fresh
So a few months ago I published a postcard I designed for TAMUCC's New Student Orientation. Finally we have the unveiling of the T-Shirt that will be given out to all the new freshmen (about 2,000 in total).
This is a t-shirt I've had in the back of head for a few years now. It's a complete play on words. From a distance, the shirt reads 'So FRESH' (as you can obviously see for yourself). But, if you look closely, the word 'man' is in the bottom corner of the 'H'. If you put two and two together, the shirt read 'So FRESHMAN'....perfect for any first year college student. Just click on the shirt to see an upclose view.
Enjoy and have a great Friday!

June = New Logo Month
So here I am again posting about new logos. It seems like summer is the time for sports teams to ditch their old identities and completely get a new one.
Today I not only have one rebranded identities, but two. Ok, so the second one isn't so much of a rebrand as it is a 'color' update....but it's a new one none-the-less.
First up we have the Nashville Predators of the NHL.
I think this rebrand is really smart. The Predators already had a strong logo, just needed a little bit of an update and pushed into the modern era. Don't fix what isn't broke. The 'Preds' did just that. Loose the chrome touch, dull down the detail, use just your primary colors and call it a day. Well done. I'm not one for owning sports jerseys. Just depending on what we see from Reebok, this would look great framed, mounted on on the wall in my sports cage.
As for the logo, also VERY smart. Go super simple. The previous logo while pretty sweet and unique wasn't really equipped to be shoulder patch logo. It need to be used as a 'front and center' logo. The new logo incorporates 3 basic items. First a guitar pick, which makes perfect sense considering Nashville's tie to Country music. You also have a simplified piece of the new abbreviated mark, plus a link to Tennessee's state flag. The logo isn't bold and doesn't blow you away, but it's smart and will look great on a jersey.
Next up is the New York Knicks.
Yes, obviously not earth-shattering. In fact, if they weren't next to each other, probably wouldn't be able to tell the different right away. But it a pretty solid improvement. I think the important thing here is that the wordmark 'pops' a lot more. It doesn't get lost in the shadow as much as it did. Overall nice touch.
Hopefully, there won't be many more of these the rest of the summer.
I'll have a few new projects up soon including a new logo and website for a local Corpus Christi business, new brochure design, not to mention the entire marketing suite of the IceRays for the 2011-2012 (including new tickets, program, website and schedules). Stay tuned.

Paging Doctor.....
Recently, I was approached about doing a t-shirt for the Cardiac Unit at Christus Spohn Shoreline here in Corpus Christi. I've done a lot of health-related t-shirts in the past, but this one I got to us my imagination with a bit more than I had in the past.

Logo Review: Washington Wizards
I've been meaning to put this design nugget up for a while and just haven't had the chance...but luckily, I'm finally getting to it.
In case you haven't heard, the Washington Wizards, after having one of the worst logo in the NBA for 9 seasons, got a somewhat new logo and brand. You can see some of the logos and items below.
In my opinion, the Wizards missed a HUGE opportunity here.
I have never cared for the Wizards primary logo very much. I think it's one of the poorer logos in all of the NBA (right up there with the Charlotte Bobcats). So needless to say I was pretty disappointed to see that the Microsoft Clipart-styled Merlin was returning, just with new colors. If you look closely you will notice that the width of the logo was taken in a bit, but besides that, the logo has remained unchanged. I think this was a pretty major mistake.
What is even more perplexing is the remaining logos. From a branding point, I don't think any of it goes together. You have a really crisp set of word marks and an alternate logo (that goes a long with it). Then you on the opposite end of the spectrum, you have a 'DC' logo out of the 70's that is nearly identical to the old Bullets Logo. In addition you have uniforms that go with that old vintage sty;e look. Then, you throw in thenew revamped 'wizard' and none of it makes much sense. It looks like it's Thursday night and you're making a big pot of leftover stew. In 3 complete different styles turned into one.
I get the whole 'let's return to the glory days.' Vintage is in right, I understand, but the brand is being pulled in too many directions. In my opinion, it seems like the saw the 76's move last off-season, saw its success and thought 'hey, we can do that, but make it even better.' In this situation, I think they tried a little too hard and went a little too over the top.
The Wizards need to rewind and and scrap the wizard all together. Loose it, it's going nowhere. Start with your wordmarks and alternate logo. Those are solid and the direction you need to head. I don't mind the National Monument reference. I think it's important for teams to show some sense of community. From there, design a completely new primary logo and different uniforms. Given the style of the logo, I think you could something a bit edgier like what the Hawks have.
If you're going to do a redesign, do a redesign. You can't recycle a logo unless it's awesome to begin with.
But I do have some optimism. I wouldn't be a bit surprised in the next few seasons, or even this one for that matter, for the Wizard to get thrown in the back seat. I think it's very possible that you will see the alternate take over and the Wizards to use their 'DC' mark and basketball more than the 'lanky Harry Potter with a beard.' This switch would be similar to what the Blue Jackets of the NHL did a few years back when then alternate logo became their primary.
So to recap....do I like the new brand? Well, I guess it's an improvement. Do I think it's one of the best in the NBA? I defiantly wouldn't go that far, but it is better than what they had.
In the coming months, I hope to do more of these reviews and have new logo updates. Eventually, (when things slow down a bit), I would like do some Sport Logo Concepts of my own. I may even start with this one. But we'll have to see if time allows.

Hot Off The Presses
Right now is a usually a pretty busy time of year. In addition to doing my normal freelancing work, now is the time I work on all of the new IceRays promotional materials such as pocket & magnet schedules, ticket booklets, re-haul the website, etc.
One project I've been wanting to do for a long time is mock-up a new logo for a unique program the IceRays run called 'The Intern.' Essentially, it works just like NBC's Apprentice, but with hockey team interns instead.
Luckily, I had some down time tonight and wanted a quick project that I could knock-out and this one came to mind.
The update isn't earth-shattering from what it was before, but it is new. I've been playing around quite a bit with fades and gradients and knew this was the perfect place to experiment a little bit more. To some designers this is a big no-no when it comes to logos....but in my opinion, there's a place for everything. Enjoy.

A Pretty Sweet Feeling
One of the best things I like about my job is seeing your work in random places when you're least expecting it.
For example, you're driving through town and you notice one of your logos on a bumper sticker, or see one of your fliers at a local coffee shop. I've been designing professionally for years and it's still a cool feeling to see work available in the public eye.
Just over a year ago I came up with the design below. If it looks familiar, an almost identical design was used for an Orientation T-Shirt.
Well, this design came back to life with the promotion of 'Generation TX Day.' In short, an event that took place state-wide promoting the good of a college education. As part of the festivities, TAMUCC faculty & staff got together a took a giant group photo. Needless to say, it's a pretty sweet feeling seeing THAT many people wearing a t-shirt you designed.

Who Says It Can't Be Done?
Usually I like to take my time when it comes to my designs, but that doesn't mean I can't speed up a process if I need to.
Just last week, I was approached with doing a website for the Mobile Go Center at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. For those that aren't familiar with Mobile Go Centers, you can find these at Colleges and Universities around the state of Texas. Essentially, these are traveling computer labs that Universities can take to college fairs, high schools, career days, etc.
The website was going to be an internal website used within the Go Center that would navigate students to a variety of links that they could do within the Go Center. Though it was a pretty simple project, it needed a turnaround of 2 days, a pretty tall task.
Needless to say I got the job done and I'm very happy with the results. Hope you like it too!

Pomp and Circumstance
So, as you can see the blog is still going through the some growing pains. Good news though, it will updated and fixed by the end of this week. I've been wanting to work on it more than I have, but works come first....and that brings us to today's post.
As you know it's graduation season. That means black caps & gowns, lots of teary eyes and what else but invitations! I was lucky enough to be asked to do several this year. Personal invitations are always fun because it's a chance to represent the person's personality on paper. Though Times New Roman and Arial may not make a big difference to you, they speak volumes about a person's personality. So it's always a fun challenge to construct these because every one is so different from the next.

Logo Review: ASU
So as you can see, there are some obvious changes going on at the ole blog. The layout had been around for nearly 2 years so it was time for an update. Things aren't completely done yet as I'm still perfecting some of the fonts and backgrounds, but you get the basic idea.
Things have been busy around Wag Graphics. I have several projects in the chute, including my annual redesign of the IceRays marketing pieces (website, schedule, tickets, etc.). Not to mention I'm also working on several personal projects for my wedding coming up in November. One thing I have learned...it is VERY difficult to design for yourself.
This brings up to today's logo review of Arizonia State's new logo. Somehow this slid in under my radar. I'm pretty good about keeping up with new logos coming, but this one escaped my grasp.
When I first heard about the new logo, I'll admit, I was a little disappointed and quite shocked. Sparky has become an ASU institution, loved by students and alumni alike. Most colleges go by the rule 'if it's not broke, don't fix it.' If a logo well liked, then why change it? Well according a representative of the Athletics Department, the change was made because "there was a lack or real consistency" between all the sports teams.
This I completely get. In fact, it is a huge pet peeve. Having worked in the sports marketing world, I think it's an annoyance when the Art Director doesn't follow a general theme when designing their items. Or for with collegiate sports, when none of the team's uniforms or logos look the same.
With branding (especially sports teams) it's always a sticky situation to change logos. As someone who works with branding and marketing, your job is to keep things fresh and updated, but fans like tradition. They want the same logos, same uniforms. They want constant stability. So it's tough to find a balance between the two. This is one reason why recently you've seen an increase in what I call 'slight re-branding.' For example, the Detroit Lions going from this lion to a slightly more detailed one.
I come from the school of thought, that there are some logos that can never be changed (or have major changes anyway). They are legends in themselves...these are traditions and have to stay the same.
I think Sparky is pretty borderline. Nationwide, he might not be as well known as some, but in Arizona (love 'em or hate 'em) he's a house name. I mean he has been around since 1980.
I guess my beef doesn't lie with with the logo, but the rebranding.
As for the new logo, it's slick. It's simple, fresh, modern and menacing. It's got detail, but is basic enough that you know what it is from a distance. The font is a good addition. This is a custom designed font that Nike created for the project. Overall it's a good look. I'm not sure if it will become a 'legendary' brand or not, but it's good work in the least.
One thing I did like is that Sparky's logo still makes appearances on the back of the football helmet. I wouldn't be shocked to see him appear in more places and used more as an alternate.
Overall, I think it's a solid 'B' job by ASU. It will be interesting to see how the alumni react in the coming months.
I'll keep you posted on some new projects...have a good weekend!

Strike A Pose
My most recent project had me working with the awesome ladies at the newly created Dulce & Bellezza Photography, Liana Gonzales and Kateri Reyes. These two ladies originally each had their own separate photography businesses, but have now combined forces into one powerhouse of a studio
This one was a different project than I'm used to working on since it is a bit more feminine than my own personal design style, but it was a great challenge and came out awesome!
If anyone is looking for a photographer, I highly recommend that you give their website a visit:

Coming to a College Near You
Soon high school seniors all over the country will be flocking to college campus'...why you ask? It's all because of a little something called orientation. Last week, I designed the new postcard for TAMUCC's New Student Orientation.
This is the first of many pieces that will be debuting for this year's Orientation that I am self-entitling the 'So Fresh' campaign. It'll make make more sense once you see everything else....

This project was a lot of fun. I finally got to something on my Design 'To-Do' list, and that was to design a postcard with a non-traditional size. Ironically, this one actually started as a generic 4x6 inch postcard. After starring at it for a few hours, I was just unhappy with it...there was no pop. So after playing with the dimensions I came up with this. Needless to say, very excited the way it turned out.
Also, keep your eyes peeled....a new logo will be debuting later this week...quite possibly tomorrow and is one of my biggest clients to date, so keep you eyes peeled!

All Shiny & New
So I fully realize it's been a while since my last blogging. Things have been pretty busy in the ole' graphics shop as well as life in general. I've been working on several including the launching of a new website in which I am completely excited about.
You better believe, when it's ready to go, I will make the official unveiling here.
But It seems like 2011 has been the year of the logo. Most recently the IceRays had another neat project they threw my way. For those that don't follow or are familiar with Junior-level hockey, each team recruits heavily throughout the year, including the regular season. Teams are always looking to keep their teams solid on the ice, but are always looking towards the future as well. It's very much like recruiting for a college-level sports team, but here players can be traded from team to team.
Well in the off-season it is very common for teams to hold try-outs, camps or combines all over the country to look under every rock for new talent. This logo was used just a few weeks ago during a combine here in Corpus Christi which brought players in from all over the US.

Compared to my other logos in my portfolio, I think it's easy to see that I've been playing around with some new techniques and looks when it comes to designs. This is something I want to do more of in the future. Eventually, I would even like to even experiment a bit in re-branding professional sports' logos just for fun and practice....guess I'll have to save that for a rainy day.

Grease is the Word
Though you haven't seen many postings, I've been doing a LOT of t-shirt designs recently. This one I was approached with a few weeks ago and it was one of those projects I couldn't wait to work on.
Every year, TAMUCC does a Relay for Life event. This year, the Student Nurses Association approached me about doing a t-shirt for them to coincide with their theme. The theme for the overall event this year is 'Rocking Through the Ages.' So the officers of the SNA decided to slick their hair back and go with a Grease theme.
After a bit of playing around and sketching I came up with this tee. Of the organizations I have designed for in the past, this is probably one of my favorite t-shirt designs. Needless to say, I will defiantly be adding this one to my closet.

Can't Win Them All
Recently, I worked with the Corpus Christi IceRays on a pitch to bring the Robertson to the Coastal Bend. For those of you who don't know, the Robertson Cup is to the NAHL as the Stanley Cup is to the NHL. Each year, there is host city selected....sort of like how the Final Four in NCAA Basketball.
My part was to design the logo for the tournament (if it came to Corpus Christi). This was the first logo of its kind that I've ever has the chance to design. The biggest difficulty was attempting to match the style of the logo to match the rest of league.
Each graphic design has it's own niches and style, just like a chef cooks a certain type of food or an author writes in a particular way. In an odd way, I had a lot of fun working on this logo. Though it kept me up to late, it was a big challenge that I enjoyed taking on.
The other challenge with this one was incorporating a wide variety of elements into one cohesive logo. I had to include the name of the event, the cup itself, dates, plus, a touch of Corpus Christi.
Unfortunately, the IceRays didn't win the bid, so the only place you'll be seeing this logo is right here, but it definitely one of those projects I had fun doing.

Better The Second Time Around
Part of my undertakings sometimes consist of revisions of previous work. For example (like the one below) taking a logo and making it better, changing the color or just cleaning it up. I've even done things like replicating baby shower invites...but that's a whole other story.
In the Fall of 2010, the Student Nursing Association at TAMUCC approached me about designing some t-shirts as well as tweaking their current logo. You can see some of those t-shirts right here.
As for the logo, originally, it was pretty bulky and just needed an updated touch. They didn't want anything drastic, just something fresh. You can see the finished product below. Though it's not a dramatic update or 'earth' shattering design, it's easy to see the improvement.
The new logos I've been working on are well on their way and will be making their debut very soon!
In the Fall of 2010, the Student Nursing Association at TAMUCC approached me about designing some t-shirts as well as tweaking their current logo. You can see some of those t-shirts right here.

Lover Not A Fighter
This week of Valentine's has brought tons of work to the land of Wag Graphics and many new projects I'm extremely excited to working on. Since I can't reveal in detail some of the projects....I can talk in generalities.
This week has brought me a total of THREE new logos all of which differ greatly. Also have a new website in the work, fliers and wedding items (and not my own actually). Needless to say, the late bedtimes have brought me a lot of fun over the past few days.
One thing I am excited about adding in the next few weeks, is a new feature under the 'About Me' section that's going to discuss how I go about designing logos. That way you'll be able to see the full process I go through to give you a product. I've done logos the same way for over 5 years now and I've hardly changed. Though the process requires me to stretch my mind (which can become pretty difficult sometimes), you'll see that it produces terrific results.
I'll be revealing some of the new items in the coming weeks!

How Could I Forget
So I was working on a few items tonight and it made me think of a logo that I never posted to the website. During the summer of 2010, me and group of friends decided to take part in a softball league.
Needless to say, we didn't have the best record, but it was still a lot of fun. Anyway...back to the reason for the posting. What would a team be without a logo and t-shirts? So the team voted on a mascot and a Blowfish ended up winning (with 'The Crackerjacks' being a close second).
This one was a lot of fun to do. Just wanted to share.
Hope you enjoy the rest of your week!

Updates & Goodies
So I fully realize it has been ages since I've updated the page. In addition to adding more design items to my portfolio, I'm also doing an overhaul of the website. As 'OCD' as it sounds, there were some things I wasn't happy with that I decided to change. So expect to see some subtle changes the next few weeks.
Now on to the news.
For those that know me, you understand my love for sports. In working in the sports field for a number of years, I have an attraction to the design/marketing aspect of the sports industry. There's a few things I've learned over the years. One in particular can be applied to nearly every sport at every level.
Rule 1, tradition and legacy equals simplicity. Some of the greatest logos are ones that have lasted years. The New York Yankees, Montreal Canadians, Chicago Bears. These are classic logos that are great that will probably never differ much. This is why older clubs always seem to have 'boring' identities, while the new ones are always going for pop.
Well, today the Tampa Bay Lighting continued on their road of trying to find their marketing niche. The club issued a brand-new identity this morning. One unique thing I have found about hockey is that you're seeing the NHL take a vintage swing. All the teams are aiming for that classic look. Whereas with the lower leagues, like AHL, ECHL, CHL, etc....you're going to find more wild ideas, concepts and much more intricate logos.
I must admit, I'm disappointed with the new look. Now don't get me wrong, not hating on the Lighting...designing a team logo is a VERY hard thing to do. But the logo just lacks pop. Not to mention that the shoulder logo looks like a electricity company. I'll be interested to see reviews and columnist rumblings in the weeks to come.
IN THE COMING MONTHS...
Lots of big stuff to come in the coming months. Right now I'm concentrating on exploring new types of designing, especially the modern and minimalist areas. Also will be adding a bunch of new pieces for my wedding in November.
I'll Keep in touch.
